Rooftop Bloom

Ever noticed how during early summer the chimney stacks of many older houses flourish with the incongruous bloom of vagrant seed that become more established each year…

Water Distress

Occasional pleasant surprises that occur by accident happened with these images after suffering water damage in storage several years ago.
Originally taken 30 years ago of dwellings in Mevagissey Cornwall, the resultant distressed effect on the film has produced surreal abstractions that reflect their trials of life.
By unfortunate coincidence the original location where I photographed these images was deluged with floods in 2010 and the actual houses in these photos were also badly damaged by water.
...Serendipity & Zemblanity.

RIP…Smithfield Horsefair

The demise of the well trodden Smithfield Horsefair has finally happened.
Threatened with possible closure for some time due to security & safety issues amongst others, the DCC has made refurbishments to the Smithfield Square & adjacent Haymarket which has rendered it inaccessible for the market use that had previously taken place on the first Sunday of every month, since it’s incarnation in 1664 as a cattle & hay market in northside Dublin.
This image shows the only remaining object on the square that commemorates the event & it is with no doubt that the passing of the monthly ‘meet’  will be felt by all those who knew the atmosphere & positive character of the place.

Ireland 2012

Having recently returned to the location that I photographed 30 years ago in Dublin’s docklands, this image sums up for me the precarious situation Ireland finds itself in
due to the political hubris and bluster of the past decade, and suggests to me that we have learned nothing since the recessionary times of the 1980’s….
